week 6 post B

These chapters have been my favorite so far, from XEnophilus lovegood too Malfoy manner. They show soo much of what the book is getting at, and it reveals so much about the whole story of Harry potter. It xenophilius Lovegood which was an ok chapter, Xeno who is a huggggge harry supporter tricks them into coming in and believing that luna( his daughter) is there. Really luna was captured by voldy and xeno thinks that if he turns harry and his friends in luna will be spared. Too bad harrys a stud and escapes. in The tale of the three brothers, hermoine reads her book beadle and bard and learns about the Deathly hallows which if attained would make someone invincible basically. ( 1 hallow is the wand, 1 is the cloak, and one is the stone that can ressurect people). In the Deathly Hallows they talk about the hallows, and voldys plot, and then HArry says Voldemorts name which is taboo'd which means that the death eaters can track anyone down who says his name. They get caught and are brought to The malfoy manner where they see griphook, olivander and then with the help of dobby they escape, but unfortunately Dobby is killed in the process. oh yeah and they collect like 3 wands that they grab at the Malfoys house. so now they all have wands. i forgot to mention in my old post that hermoine accidently broke harrys wand while escaping one time.

week 6 post A

Vocab
tonic(444)- a medicine that invigorates or strengthens.
hyacinths(438)- a bulbous Mediterranean plant.
Figurative language
1.He glanced out of the window again. te sky was now tinged with the faintest trace of pink(411)- this is an example of imagery because you can imagine and visualize the color of the sky and what t looks like.
2. Harry waited until they could hear Xenophilius moving about in the kitchen downstairs before speaking(413)- this is an example of imagery because you can imagine the ackward silence that heppened while they waited for him to move, and you can imagine what the walking in the kitchen sounded like from above in the attic.
3.but ron stopped talking, and Harry knew why. The Sneakoscope on the table had lit up and begun to spin; they could hear voices coming nearer and nearer: rough excited voices(445)- this is an easssy example of imagery because if you cant imagine this scene in your head then you have no imagination at all. you can see in your head the sudden stop of talking and them all turning there heads to the sneakoscope which starts up.
Quote
"vol -demorts after the elder wand!"
"The name's taboo!"
this is an important quote because it is when harry accidently says voldemort and remembers that it is taboo. this makes a differance in the book because right after he says Voldemorts name a group of like 12 death eaters show up outside there tent and takes them away to the Malfoy mannor.
Theme
Another theme that pops up in these chapters is forgiveness because harry has to forgive Ron and let him come back and also he has to forgive himself because he IS kinda the reason Dobby is dead.

Week 5 Post B

In these chapters we find out that Grindelwald and Dumbledore were good friends and used to talk to eachother alot. I have heard the rumurs and stilll dont believe them, but just recently the author came out and said that Grindelwald and dumbledore were gay together. I dont like the thought of that because its just weird for me to think about because ive read alll the books thinking hes straight, and then they just tell me hes gay, i dont like that.
I like the next chapter also becasue ron comes back and they destroy the horcrux with the sword. the sword can destroy the horcrux because it is goblin made and when harry killed the monster snake(forget the name of it) in the chamber of secret, the poisen from the snake "impregnated"(the book says) the sword and so it keeps that poisen in it since it is made by goblins. cas goblin shit is sick.

q2 week 5 post a

threadbare(379)- poor and meager
gingerly(386)- with great care and caution

1.Harry got to his feet again and wiped his nose noisily on his sleeve.(378) -this is an example of imagery because i can imagine exactly what that sounds like.
2. He could feel the locket quivering in his grip and was scared of what was coming.(376)- this is an example of imagery because i can visualize this in my head.
3. His eyes were wide and the riddel-harry and he riddle-hermoine were reflected in them, their hair swirling like flames, their eyes shining red, their voices lifeted in an evil duet.(377).- this is also an example of imagery because it appeals to my visual senses and i can imagine what the riddle harry and rddle hermoine look like.

quote(378)- "she's like my sister," he went on. "I love her like a sister and i reckon she feels he same way about me. It's always been like that. I thought you knew."- this is an important quote becasue tthis is a reason why ron left in the first place, and now harrys telling him its not true and ron believes him this time.

Theme_
A new theme that arises in this chapter is to forgive since ron comes back and harry and hermoine have to forgive him for leaving.

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

q2 week 4 post B

In these chapters alot happens. First in the goblins revenge Ron( harrys bestfriend, and hermoines boyfriend) leaves them becasue he and harry got into a huge argument, which most likely was caused by the increased anger from wearing the horcrux(if you wear the horcrux you get unpatient, angry, etc).
In Godrics hollow and Bathildas's Secret Harry and Hermoine go to Godrics Hollow which is where Harry was born and lived when Voldemort first lost his powers from before even the 1st book. It is also the place where many rescpectable wizard families live, one of them being Bathilda Bagshot, who was a close freind of the Dumbledore family and was probly going to help Harry and Hermoine. When Harry and Hermoine finally find Bathilda she takes them back to her house where she does not speak at all, and she actually tries to split them up so she can talk to Harry alone. Harry and her go upstairs, and then she starts to talk and then Voldemorts snake pops out of her head and has a fight seen with Harry. Harry and Hermoine escape just in time so that Voldemort doesnt kill them.
analysis- "Bathilda" didnt speak at all in front of Hermoine because it was the snake nigini and could only speak parseltougne which only Harry and Voldemort can speak, so NIgini only spoke in front of Harry.

Q2 week 4 post A

Vocab
Tantalizingly(295)- having or exhibiting something that provokes or arouses expectation, interest, or desire
Confunded(296)- ((No Deffinition for the word))

Figurative Language
1."There were several distinct splashes and then the slapping sounds of fish against flesh"(294)- this is imagery because it uses there hearing senses and it appeals to my hearing, but i can also visualize it also.
2." Then he climbed onto his own bed and stared up at the dark canvas roof, listening to the pounding of the rain."(310) this is imagery because it appeals to my hearing and my sight again.
3."The snake struke as he raised his wand: The force of the bite to his forearm sent the wand spinning up toward the ceiling."(340) This is imagery because it appeals to my sight sences because i can imagine exactly what that looked like.

Quote
"He's g-g-gone! Disapparated!"(310) this is an important quote because it is talking about how Ron left the group to go home. He bailed out and he was harry best friend and basically Hermoines boyfriend. he was am important factor in there survival and now he left, so now we have to see if he'll come back or not or what will happen.

Theme
The Theme in these chapters are Friendship, and patience like the other chapters , but then a new theme that arises is Loyalty.

Sunday, December 2, 2007

Q2 Week 3 post B

In the chapters Magic is might and The muggle-born registration commision harry ron and Hermoine sneak into the Ministry of magic to try and find the locket that they believe Dolores Umbridge has in her office. What makes these chapters so exciting is that Harry Ron and Hermoine are now the three most wanted people by Lord Voldemort, and Voldy controls the ministry and the ministry is probably the most dangerous place for them to be going. They observe the ministry for some time before they actually go out with there plan to steal the locket, and they each find one person that they are going to impersonate. They go on with there plans and when they get there they notice how much the ministry has changed. But the plans dont go as planned and each one of them gets distracted from what they came to do and are set off to perserve the illusion of who they are pretending to be. For example, Hermoine has to be the judge and quistion a mudblood to see if there magic should be taken away, she has to do this with Umbridge next to her which ends up distracting umbridge long enough for Harry to search her office. The locket ends up being around Umbridges neck and harry and hermoine stun Umbridge and Yaxley and are able to retrieve it and barely escape.

Q2 week3 post A

Vocab.
Obligatory(210)- Mandatory, required as a matter of obligation
Rebuffing(217)- A blunt or abrupt repulse or refusal

Figurative Language

1) "Aware that Hermoine was watching his suspiciously, Harry hurried up the stairs to the hall and then to the first landing, where he dashed into the bathroom and bolted the door again.(232)- This is an example of imagery of how harry was trying to escape the others from knowing that he was about to have another sighting, and how he tried to be secretive with it.

2)" they made their way onto the front step with immense caution: They could see a couple of puffy-eyed Death Eaters watching the house from across the misty square.(236)- this is again an example of imagery because the way that they are leaving the house you can invision it in your mind.

3) "Remus, Remus, come back!" (214) - the tone of this quote is sad and pleading because Hermoine is trying to get remus to stay even after what harry said to him.

Quote
"Id never have believed this," Harry said. "The mas who taught me to fight dementors- a coward."(214)- This is an important quote because Remus is one of the last people on Harrys side and now harry just upset him, and its unfortunate that Remus isnt joining them but i agree with harry that Remus should stay back with Tonks and their kid.

Theme
The theme of the book still remains to be freidship but another theme that shows up is patience and that if you can wait , the right time will show itself.

q2 week 2 post B

So far ive really liked the book and i cant wait till i see whats going to happen next, but i also dont want to know because then i might finish it too early and then itd be done and there would be no more.
I like these last few chapters, but especially "A place to hide" and "Kreachers tale" because i have seen in this book and others what house elves can do and there pretty sick nasty so its cool that kreacher is starting to like Harry because then its like having a second Dobby who can do like whatever Harry wants him to do and dissasporate anywhere. Also i like this chapter because it has a cool story behind it, with how Regulus Arctucus Black( sirius's younger brother) had worked for Voldemort, but then changed his mind, and with Kreacher he searched out and found the Horcrux and stole it, and told kreacher not to tell anyone in the FAMILY what happened, but since Harrys the owner of Kreacher and Harrys not a Black, that means that Kreacher is able to tell Harry the story(which hasnt been told to anyone).

Q2 week 2 post A

skittering(171)-to move rapidly along a surface with usually light touches, or changing directions a lot too.
solidified(173)- to make solid, into a hard or compact mass

Figurative Language
1.Silence spread outward in cold ripples from the place where the patronus had landed.(160)- this is imagery because its easy to see in your mind exactly whats happening.
2. Dust swirled around Harry like mist, catching the blue gaslight, as Mrs.Black continued to scream.(171)- This again is imagery because it gives a clear picture of whats happening, and its detailed and descriptive.
3.His scar had burned again as something flashed across his mind like a bright light on water(172)- his is figurative language and it might be a simile because its comparing his scar hurting to light on water.

Quote
"The Ministy has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming."(159)- this is a very important quote because Kingsley says it with his patronus to warn the guests at the wedding that the Death Earters were going to attack and so it gave people time to escape, but not much.

Theme.
The Theme of the book so far is that you have to keep your friends close and just in general friendship.

Oustide reading, Quarter 2 Week 1 post B

Already in the book i can tell that this will be my favorite Harry Potter book yet. It is action filled starting with the first chapter, its mysterious and leaves you wondering your own ideas about certain characters and what here going to do next but its also kind of sad because already in the book a few big characters have already died.
My favorite chapter so far is The Seven Potters, because its cool how he was able to escape. Harry's departing group made pollyjuice potion and made 6 of the poeple look identicle to Harry, and then they dressed them all up like him and gave them alll luggage and each one pretended they were Harry. The Deatheaters came and they were really confused on who was the real Harry Potter, and so eventually after being chased by Voldemort, Harry escaped on the bike of Hagrid.
Unfortunatly, one of their strongest members of the Pheonix died, Mad-eye moody.

Outside Reading, Quarter 2, Week 1, Post A

Vocab:
unobscured(73)-clear to the understanding; not hard to perceive
retort(71)- to reply to, usually in a sharp or retaliatory way
Figurative Language:
1.Harry dropped the hair into the mudlike liquid(50)- this is figurative language because it uses a simile "like"
2.Revulsion and fury rose in him like vomit(28)- its relating his revulsion and fury to vomit using a simile.
3.Lucius Malfoy looked up . his skin appeared yellowish and waxy in the firelight, and his eyes were sunken and shadowed. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse.(7)- this is an example of imagery which is figuative language because you can imagine that picture in your head as you read it.
Quote: "My Lord, the Order of the Phoenix intends to move Harrry Potter from his current place of safety on saturday next, at nightfall."(3)-- This is an important quote because he says it to Lord Voldemort who then acts upon it and ambushes the moving party, and he ends up killing Mad-Eye Moody.

Theme The theme of the book so far is friendship and that friends are more important then anything else.

"Our Endangered Values"

As I finished reading Jimmy Carters paper on our environment, I see how much more I could be doing to save the environment. Our environment is highly unstable and is getting a lot worse every day. I agree with Jimmy Carter that something needs to be done and I think that the United States should be the ones who set an example for the rest of the world.
One major threat to the environment Jimmy Carter shares is that we should use cars that get better MPG and he talks about the problem of Automobile company's finding loopholes when trying to find there cars' mpg. If our cars would get better mileage, and maybe if we'd start using other forms of energy for them then we wouldn't have to rely so much on foreign oil. Cars alone use more then 40% of our country's oil supply which we could easily lower if everybody did there part. If we lower the mpg that our cars take up, we could postpone and maybe even never have to drill for oil in Alaska. Also, if Automobile company's are trying to find loopholes in the rules that end up lying to us, we should make the rules stricter and make sure there are no loopholes, so that the company's cant continue to cheat us.

The Sea Inside Reflection Extra credit

A New Perspective

My opinion on the movie, “The Sea Inside” is that it is a very interesting movie. This movie enlightened me on both sides of the spectrum on the topic of Euthanasia which is the right to die, or to be assisted to kill yourself. Before this movie I thought that people who want to kill themselves are just weird like that and don’t have any real good reasons, but after seeing this movie, I see that there are many reasons why people might want to kill themselves whether it is to leave with some dignity, or maybe its just because there in too much pain to continue on like they are. This movie was effective on getting there point across because it really persuaded me to a point now where I am unsure where I stand on he topic of Euthanasia.

The Sea Inside was a really great movie due to its many literary aspects it possessed. The main character Ramon was played wonderfully, but I think the best portrayal of any character was done by Ramon’s sister-in-law, who never once had a boring part. She was continuously in the middle of arguments between Ramón and José, but also you could tell that even within the acting there was an internal battle going on between if she wants the courts or anyone else to help Ramon with killing himself or if she wants him to just keep living, since she respects his decisions, but still loves him too much to let him go. The sea is a symbol of both Ramon’s freedom, since Ramon was a sailor before the accident and he loved everything about the sea, and it was also his captive, because the sea is also what caused him to be a quadriplegic.

Although the film had very good literary aspects, I feel it lacked a little bit in the cinematic aspects of the film. I feel that the camera angle while Ramon was in bed did not portray well enough how boring and annoying it would be to see the same things day after day for 28 years, which I feel was an issue for him. During the movie, I also felt that the music was not used to better the scenes, and at times it almost seemed to change the message of the scene to a totally different meaning then what they were trying to portray. Also at the end of the movie I feel that when Javi was chasing after the car it would’ve been more effective to have a medium shot before they zoomed out to a long shot, because the message didn’t really have any meaning to me when it started zooming out more from an already long shot. On the other hand though, I do like how the director put in under water close-ups to show what happened underwater which really showed the importance and magnitude in relation to the story.

Between the movie The Sea Inside and the book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly the similarities and differences are between the main characters. Ramon and Jean-Dominique Bauby are similar and different in many ways. They are similar in many ways like how they both made a book about the condition they both are in. Also as it was evident in both the movie and the book, they were each good with the ladies. On the other hand they were both also very different. First off, the time period in which the accidents occurred were different since Baubys’ happened when he was middle aged, and Ramon’s happened when he was a young man. Also the general outlook on life is difference since Bauby is looking for hope to be able to get a little bit better, while Ramon just wants to die with the dignity he still has.

I would definitely recommend this movie to just about anyone. Whether you are for Euthanasia or even if you’re strongly against it, I think either way it’s a good eye opener. The movie was very touching and well made. The characters were fabulous and people could really relate to them. This movie in specific makes you re-think about your own feelings and position on euthanasia and if it should be allowed or not.

Week 5 Post B

Dear Tony
I have been reading your book now for a really long time and im getting really close to finishing. I think its really cool how you name your chapters and how they also tell a story also. For example, one of your chapters is called "walking the plank", which many unfortunate events happen to you and your family with your mother dyeing and you losing your job, and the next chapter is called "a soft landing", which is like a transition, and your luck kind of turns around. I found this cool because its like walking the plank and thats real bad, but then have a soft landing, i thought the names of those two chapters were very clever.
Also id just like to say that i am sorry that all these bad things keep happening to you. I know many bad things happen to everyone, but all of these things happen so suddenly in your life, and i duno how you could deal with a loss of job, your mother dieing and your son taking his life. I really respect how through all of these events you have kept God as a big part of your life as usual. Many people would not be able to go through what you did, and still believe that there even is a God, while for you it just made you talk to God a little more.
I have not finished reading, and i plan to finish in the next few days, but i hope that things start looking up for you and your family , which i am pretty sure they do since there are pictures with you after you had won the SuperBowl. So goodluck with everything, and i hope everything turns out alright.
Sincerly
Charlie ______.

Week 5 post A

Vocab
Naysayers(241)- a person who habitually expresses negative or pessimistic views
Retrospect(238)- To look back and contemplate retrospectively

Appeals
"We went 12-4 and won the AFC South Division for the second straight year."(238) - This is a logical appeal because it shows a record which is a statistic or fact so its a logical appeal.

"For the fourth year in a row, we started the season 3-4."(187)- This is a logical appeal because it is a statistic that shows how they started there season.

"But this game, I was focused on the anthem itself- the words, the music, the meaning- as much as the game"(190)- This is an emotional appeal because the song symbolizes more then just a song to Tony for this game, (since the game was right after september 11).

Quote
"Tony, sit tight. I'm going to find a flight. i'll be in Indy tonight." - this is a very important quote because it shows that Tony was going through soo much during this time, with the death of his mother and now his son james, and its good that he has such good friends that are willing to just fly to him on christmas when a thing like this happened, instead of just like calling him.

Theme
The theme in these chapters to me seem as if it was that you need to stick with God even through the roughest times, because its all apart of his plan.

Monday, October 22, 2007

Week 4 post B

Dear Tony
I have noticed throughout your book that continuesly people have done things wrong to you and you continuesly forgive them and consider them as good friends. I know that if any poeple would have done things to me like they have done to you, like how Marty Schottenheimer screwed you out of the defensive coordinator job twice, id probly never forgive him since he promised you, and deffinitly not put that "Marty and i remain good friends to this day" in a book that i wrote. I dont know but i guessed that this ability to forgive so easily may be because of your strong religious beliefs or maybe because you may meet these characters late on in your book at some point maybe?. well congratulations on the birth of your daughter Tiara And your son Jamie and also on the new job as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Week 4 post A

Vocab
Swagger(120)- to walk or strut with a defiant or cocky manner
Stewarding(102)- One who manages another's property, money, or other affairs.

Appeal
"Now i was going much farther than i wanted-out of town."(71)- this is an emotional appeal because this shows a sad moment for him. He doesn't want to be fired, and hes not looking forward to moving, so you feel bad for him.

"After all, Minnesota had the best record in the NFL at 5-1, while we were 0-5."(129)- This is a logical appeal because it shows a statistic that can be verified.

"I can still remember the excitement and relief we felt as the clock wound down and we wrapped up our victory, 24-13.(121)- This is a logical appeal because it shows a score of a game which is a fact which makes it a logical appeal, But also i feel that this could also be an emotional appeal because this really lets me imagine what it was like at the end of the game, because i have been in that position many times and know what that feels like.

Quote
"Tony, you're our defensive coordinator."(69) - This is an important quote because it both provides a lot of humor for the occasion and it also provides a future for what Tony will do for the next few years of his life.

Theme
The ongoing theme of religion is not as obvious in the chapters i read, a theme i noticed was to do whats best for all, and no whats just best for you and this is evident when Tony decides not to go to the 49's or the Giants when they are a whole lot better then the team he chose, which was Kansas City, because he didnt want his children growing up in such a big city.

week 3 post B

Dear Tony
I have been reading your book "Quiet Strength" and i have really enjoyed it so far. One thing i really like about your book is just the overall story of it. It's a great story already, even if the main climax hasnt happened. You grew up having race as an issue for you, you played bball and football and choose to stick with football, played college ball, didnt get drafted, joined steelers as a free agent and in your 2nd year, had the most interceptions on a winning team who won the Super Bowl, and while your at it have kept God with you all along. That right there is a good enough story for me too read, but no, im only like a fifth of the way through the book. I really like how around page 50ish it is sort of like an underdog story of a kid who hadnt even been drafted, black, worried about losing his job, who then goes out and leads the team and is tied for 10th most interceptions that year in the whole league.
i have heard alot of things about your story (even though i havent finished) from espn and other news stations, but i am still really excited to read the rest of the book. Hope all turns out well, and good luck with your team this year.

Sincerly
Charlie Grande

Week 3 post A

Vocab
Alluded(42)- to refer casually or indirectly
Meek(42)- humbly patient or docile

Appeals:
"That year, 1977, I had fair amount of playing time at the safety position, and i ended up intercepting three passes for the season."(45) - This is a logical appeal because it shows a statistic of how he had 3 interceptions.

"Yet the concept of putting God first in everything I did hadn't been my primary focus. Finally i understood, and i started to move from being a casual Christian to a fully commited follower of Jesus."(43)- this is an emotional appeal because it shows his beliefs and thoughts on life, and it makes you feel uplifted that he resolved a major issue in his life."

"We went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl over Dallas, 35-31."(51)- This is an example of a logical appeal because its a statistic and it shows both there record for the season and how much they beat Dallas by.

Quote:
"Tony, I think you're at a crossroads," Donnie said. "You know what life is all about. you profess to be a christian, and you tell everybody that God has first place in your life. Now, when your career looks like its teetering, we're getting a chance to see what really is in first place for you."
- This is a very important qoute because when Donnie said that it made Tony really think of how he was acting because of the possibility of the loss of his job , which he then changed because it wasnt how God wouldve wanted him to live.
Themes: The theme still remains that to live for the lord. BUT there also is a mini-theme in one of the chapters were a theme of believing in yourself

the diving bell and the butterfly

i thought the The diving bell and the butterfly was a decent book. I reallly liked how he was able to write the book with just blinking his eye, but i also think it might have been a disadvantage also because at some places it gets real choppy and hard to determine if its past/present, or if its real/make bielieve. As for the story, i found it very interesting story because he doesnt just add the good things of his life, he adds the bad things from his past, his present, good times from the past and others. I dont know if he couldve improved on the ending or not, but i didnt really like it all that much. i think the ending shouldve been some turning point, or some very sad moment. I know this is hard since its not like he could write if he died, but i think he couldve changed the ending, and i duno maybe i just didnt understand the ending like others but i found it reallly bad. If we do another book lets try more of an action-filled book.

Week 2 post B

My favorite character in the book so far is Mr. Rocquemore because theres people who i can compare him to in my life. Mr. Rocquemore is an assistant principle at Tonys high school who really cares for everyone at the school, but he takes a liking to Tony and his friends. Mr. Rocquemore seems really cool/nice because they say that they would go out to lunch with him and even sometimes go to the movies with him which shows that hes made personal connections with the boys. Mr. Rocquemore helps out greatly in Tonys life because when Tony was thinking about quiting football, Mr. Rocquemore convinced him to stay, and helped him sort things out.

Mr. Rocquemore resembles a church leader in my life who is a good friend of mine, but is also someone who is higher up than me if that makes sense.

week 2 post A

Vocab
Accolades(16)- an expression of approval or praise
Innovative(34)- ahead of the times, something new or different introduced.

Appeals
"Thankfully, our running backs stayed hot, the offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and we dominated Wisconsin with the run, winning 24-3." (32) - This is a logical appeal because it shows a statistic, which shows that they owned the game even though he made a real bad play.

"Tony, is this right? I've talked with your father countless times over the years and spent many a practice with him. He's a doctor?"(13) - This is an emotional appeal because it makes me like the father more, because it shows how humble he is by having Tonys good friend ask him something that he probably would've already known if his father would brag about being a doctor.

"I graduated as fourth all-time in total offense in the Big Ten, a two-time team Most Valuable Player, and captain my senior year."(34) - This is a logical appeal because it states facts about how well he did playing college football.

Quote
"Tony, you enjoy playing football, and these other guys enjoy plaing football. You should have your senior year to play, and so should they. At the end of the day, what are you really upset about, anyway?" (24) -- This is a very important quote in the book, because this quote changed Tonys mind about quiting football. If he would have quited football we probably would'nt even know who Tony Dungy is.

Theme
The theme so far in the book is that hes growing up and learning his lessons and growing from things his parents teach him, hes always stuck to his morals, and all along the way hes stuck with religion.

Outside Reading - Week 1 - Post B

So far i like how the book has been, i like how it starts out by giving a big event of his life(him getting fired by the bucs) and then it goes back into the past and talks about his early ages and then starts like a timeline of his life.

Im not much of a reader, but so far this book has kept me reading on. My favorite part so far has been when hes talking about his mom and the things she believes in. She believes in her students that she teaches and she really gets upset with the students and herself if they get anything less then there potential would allow them to (usually A's). Because of this she focuses on the b students and pushes them to become A students, which i think it really cool. In one case she even helped a kid who was apart of special ed so much that she learned that he was smart enough to be in regular classes and made the board put him in regular classes. That man went to college and now has a succesful job and owes it all to her, that was my favorite part of the book.

Outside reading- Week 1 post A

Vocab: Solace(3)- An easing of grief, loneliness, discomfort, etc.
Prognosticators(3)- a person who foretells or predicts something from signs or indicators.

Appeals:
"i knew everything would ultimately be fine, but at that moment- on that rain-swept night of Jnauary 14, 2002-my Explorer and my spirits traveled under the same dark clouds"(6) --- this is an emotional appeal because as you read it you can imagine exactly how he feels and what hes going through.

"These men had walked off the frozen, concrete-hard synthetic turf in Philadelphia with me just two days earlier, their careers critically stung by the Bucs' 31-9 loss."(3) --- This is a logical appeal because it is showing a statistic/fact saying how they lost 31 to 9, but i can also see it as moderate bacuase it shows a reason why there careers were "critically stung".

"He gives my mom complete credit for the career he has today. A life changed."(11)--- this is an emotional appeal because it shows that his mom was an extraordinary women by helping this kid shape the rest of his life.

Quote- "And they said if we did it the Lord's way, for the right reason, we would be succesful. Not that we would win every game or be wealthy, but that we would be successful in God's eyes if we did the things that glorify him"(8)--- This is an important quote because it shows how he bases everything he does in life," doing it the Lord's way", which is important because throughout the obstacles he faces he sticks to these beliefs.

Theme- So far the theme of the book seems to be religion and how you just have to stick with those beliefs through hardships that may happen to you.
